“Woodchips and Witco - The Inspiration to Carve and Collect”
Witco! The very name conjures up smiles for Tikiphiles, as most of us have at least one piece of their iconic, rough-hewn wood beauties in our homes. From Tiki designs to Spanish-influenced...to just straight-up strange…from late 1950’s through the 1970’s, the Witco company was completely unique with their style of home furnishings. Elvis Presley loved Witco so much that he had an entire room in his Graceland home (the famous “Jungle Room”) devoted to its decor. Chicago’s legendary old Hala Kahiki bar still reigns supreme as the public epicenter for Witco admirers. However, there is more to this story than a lot of burnished wood from the Pacific Northwest. Cy Bersi (aka: “Tiki Cy”) is popular designer, carver, builder and Mid-Century aficionado, whose passion for all of this started with Witco. From his childhood memories of the Stockton Islander to his visits to Oceanic Arts, Tiki Cy will take us on a deep dive into the wonderful world of Witco. Please join us for this very informative one-hour symposium, filled with photos, insights into carving techniques and excerpts of Tiki Cy’s conversations with former Witco employees. Items from Tiki Cy’s personal collection of Witco and Oceanic Arts will also be on display. As an added bonus, this symposium’s cocktail will be sponsored by Copalli Rum and crafted by Ann Goebelt, “The Home Bartender”!
