Jason T Smith (Books of Don the Beachcomber) Thursday May 16th 4pm

Tiki Caliente 11 is thrilled to premier a very special symposium into the Tiki world: Not long ago, a mysterious, business record book from Don the Beachcomber appeared at an auction. This one book held some of the answers to Don’s successes and failures. That book was won by a lucky, high-bidder but, shortly after that, this same bidder was contacted by the seller, who had found even more business ledgers from Don the Beachcomber. A deal was made and the entire collection now belongs to a beloved member of our Tiki ohana, Jason T. Smith. Many of you know Jason from his Spike TV show, “Thrift Hunters”, the symposiums he has given on Ebay commerce, and his webshows, "Thrifty Business” and “The Secret Beach Club”. In this historical talk, Jason will be sharing with you some of the information contained within these coveted books, in his symposium entitled, "Behind the Scenes At Don, Beachcomber, Inc."

Ernest Raymond Beaumont Gantt (Don The Beachcomber) had a vision and, in 1933, that vision came to life as America’s first Tiki bar called "Don's Beachcomber" on McFadden Place in Hollywood, California. However, there was someone else with a bigger vision, one that expanded that little Tiki bar all across the country, and that person was Ernest's wife, Cora Irene "Sunny" Sund. It is likely that Tiki fans all over the world today flock to Tiki bars more so because of Cora's business plan than Don's dream. By 1940, Cora was in full control of the empire and Don was an employee. Join Jason as he traces the fascinating steps that built the Don, Beachcomber, Inc. legacy, and why Don and his dreams ended up in Hawaii.

Only forty tickets will be available for this symposium at $48.00 per ticket, which will include a classic Don the Beachcomber cocktail.
